The Birmingham Business Journal announced the 2012 Top 40 Under 40 and it is no surprise to us to find James W. Carpenter among the honorees.
J.W. left a promising career with a local law firm to become founding executive director of Teach for America -Alabama. Although it was a risk leaving a partner track, the 32-year-old brought a proven track record as a Teach for America teacher in Arkansas to the position.
Since being named Executive Director of Teach for America Alabama in 2010, J.W. has:

  • Delivered thirty-two high quality teachers to six high need, low income Black Belt school districts beginning in 2010
  • Brought fifty-five additional teachers to high need, low income school districts in the Black Belt, Tuscaloosa and Birmingham beginning in 2011
  • Elected to the Board of A+ Education Partnership and the Leadership Committee of the West Alabama Literacy Initiative
  • Doubled the number of district partners to include 4 of Alabama’s 5 biggest cities:

Christian & Small is proud to partner with Teach for America and to work with J.W. to improve education for all of Alabama’s children.

J. W. Carpenter
