Christian & Small was recently recognized by the Birmingham Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program (BBVLP) as one of its “Champions for Justice” honorees. The firm achieved “Pacesetter” status by raising more than $15,000 in support for the BBVLP to aid in its mission of providing civil legal aid to low-income Birmingham citizens.
For every $1 donated to the BBVLP, the community receives $12.38 in immediate and long-term financial benefits, according to an independent study commissioned by the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation. In 2015, BBVLP volunteer attorneys helped 2,506 low-income citizens.
The BBVLP helps attorneys provide free legal services to low-income citizens unable to afford attorneys who need help with civil legal problems, including:
- Evictions
- Collections/Garnishments
- Divorce
- Child Support
- Visitation
- Other civil problems
The BBVLP does not handle criminal cases. Christian & Small Managing Partner Deborah Alley Smith served as President of the BBVLP’s Board of Directors in 2015 and currently serves on its Advisory Board.
